Everyone knows to avoid Sydney in June, July, and August. Unlike the rest of the world, who are basking in the sun and warmth, Sydney dwellers are going through our coldest months. However, there is one significant event that should be on your must-see list for June. If you missed it this year—I have good news —it happens every year, around the same time.
Vivid Sydney—the world’s most extensive outdoor ‘art-gallery—illuminates the city with a mesmerising collection of light art, installations, and projections.
Whoever said that Sydney doesn’t have an art scene, hasn’t experienced Vivid. It will leave you in absolute awe.
It is a magical celebration of light-design excellence and the world’s most extensive outdoor art gallery
I always wait with excitement to wander the streets of Sydney every year. I usually go several times, discovering new corners of the magical illuminated wonderland.
Held from May 25 to June 16 in Sydney city centre and surroundings, Vivid now has three distinct offerings: LIGHT (the displays and installations), LIVE (the music and performances), and IDEAS (the discussions).
Many of the installations are interactive, encouraging visitors to get involved.
Destination NSW delivers the festival every year, and each time fantastic new concepts and areas are involved in the showcase.
A surprise this year was Taronga Zoo’s lush grounds hosting larger-than-life animal sculptures, shining a light on conservation and the wonders of wildlife.
After you are done exploring, top off your Vivid experience with fluorescent cocktails in hand, watching the illuminated Sydney Harbour. The view from the pop-up bar on the rooftop of Museum of Contemporary Art is incredible.
You can wander the streets of the Rocks at night during the Vivid- a historical part of Sydney and let the night take you in its dark arms…who knows what will you find…
